#8 Evaluating Social Media Sources

  • National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty- Facebook Page

    Credibility:
The social media message is a share of a link from a CNN article, so the source is deemed credible.

    Location:
They are directly involved with my controversy in that they do not support the practice of Capital Punishment, or any arguments related to it. Recognized as the Facebook page of the National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty, this organization is dedicated to undermining the constitutionality and morality of capital punishment.

Network: Individuals against capital punishment follow and support this Facebook organization. 90 million individuals are united under this coalition's page. Individuals who support the organization have appeared on Dr. Phil, and other online blogs in order to spread their cause.

    Content:
Many individuals across the nation support the cause against the Death Penalty and unite under the National Coalition. Any individual can tweet or share (via Facebook) the information on the page.
Contextual Updates: This organization always posts about refuting the Death Penalty. For example, they post photos depicting signs and protests against Capital punishment, share international news stories to broaden the topic outside of domestic boundaries, and utilize quotes asserting the inhumanity of the practice of the Death Penalty.

    Age:
The Facebook page was founded in 2009.

    Reliability:
The news stories shared by the page are credible, however individual comments are highly biased and emotionally backed; thus, the personal opinions are not always accurate or reliable.

The Gospel of Hemp- Facebook Page

    Credibility:
The news stories posted by this Facebook page are generally from major networks- thus, these sources are credible. However, individual posts, random pictures, and the majority of comments are from teenagers and other young adults who share comical posts are most likely not credible, and just looking for a joke.

    Location:
This organization is not directly involved with my controversy. However, they shared an article (http://www.msnbc.com/msnbc/life-prison-selling-marijuana-people-new-pot-laws-forgot) depicting the death sentence of 67 people for selling marijuana. This article directly applies to my controversy as it analyzes the morality of Capital Punishment.

    Network:
People who support the legalization and use of marijuana follow this Facebook page.

    Content:
Many supporters of the legalization of marijuana, or other individuals who relate to the usage of marijuana on the page share the Facebook page's posts to their own in order to express themselves or attempt to spread word of legalization.

    Contextual Updates:
This page generally does not post about the death penalty, but instead the use of marijuana. Their only post about my topic was the link posted above explaining the potential executions due allegations against the illegal use of marijuana.

    Age:
This account was created in 2013.

    Reliability:
The news sources are reliable, but the personal posts are not.
